10. Corrosion Testing in the 21st
Century
Speaker:
Brian Smith, Assured Testing
Corrosion protection requirements for coated
parts are becoming increasingly more demanding.
Only 15 short years ago the standard corrosion
test was ASTM B117 Neutral Salt Fog, and the
typical requirement for zinc electroplated parts
ranged from 48 to 96 hrs, and for coated parts
240 to 480 hrs in B117 was the norm. Now,
nearly one decade into the 21st
century, finishes are expected to achieve as
much as 1500 hrs of Salt Fog, or 40, 60, even 80
cycles of one of a number of cyclic accelerated
corrosion tests, with alphanumeric designations
such as SAE J2334, GM9540P, GMW14872, VDA
621-415 and others. This presentation explains
what coating applicators need to know about the
current state of corrosion testing and what it
means for applicators and their customers.
