The Powder Within The Power
8:30 – 9:30

Speaker: Dennis Finley
, Briggs & Stratton; Bruce Bryan, Wagner Systems Inc.

In 2004 Briggs & Stratton Power Products (BSPP) installed a new powder coating system. After some initial challenges with the installation and start-up of the system, BSPP has implemented numerous process improvements to reduce operating cost and improve product quality. This presentation will provide an overview of the system with an emphasis on the internal process that is used to monitor and improve the system performance. Examples of documented and specific improvements will be included in the paper.

Ultraviolet Curable Powder Coatings for Aerospace Applications
9:30 – 10:00

Speaker:  Christopher Geib
, SAIC

Temperature sensitive substrates such as aluminum and magnesium are used in the manufacture and sustainment of weapon systems and ground support equipment. We will present a project to demonstrate, validate and successfully implement a VOC/HAP-free, UV-cure powder coating on DoD depot production hardware to replace solvent-borne organic coatings. The project will utilize both existing and new UV-curable powders and the current wet paint system in a side-by-side demonstration.

Appliance Manufacturer Uses Phosphate Replacement Technology   10:15 – 10:45
Speaker: Allen Miskowiec
, Chemetall Oakite
This presentation focuses on a case history detailing the implementation of Enhanced Performance Pretreatment (EPP) as a replacement for iron phosphate and the quantified cost savings measured over an 18-month period.

East Coast Job Shop Upgrades Its Capabilities to Ensure Growth: The Trojan Powder Coating Story
10:45 – 11:15

Speaker: Carl Troiano, Trojan Powder Coating and James Lawley, Nordson Corp.

As its manufacturing base of customers continued to shrink, Trojan Powder Coating, an East Coast job shop, decided to upgrade its capabilities to achieve faster color-change, increased application efficiency, tighter film thickness control, increased production throughput and improved overall finish quality.    Doing so enabled them to secure new business including the very demanding interior and exterior architectural coating applications. This presentation will outline the process Trojan went through in upgrading its capabilities, including adding some light assembly capacity, and the licensing of a patented “sublimation process” to create wood grain or marble finishes on aluminum, to ensure continued growth.

Users Achieve Wood Grain Finishes with Powder
11:15 – 11:45

Enrico Piva, Decoral Systems

A patented system that reproduces wood, marble and fancy effects on any complex metal profiles, sheets and 3Dimensional objects, for indoor/outdoor applications through powder coating and heat transfer films is now in use by end users of industrial coatings.  This presentation will showcase users of the new IR System machine demonstrating the systems’ capability to decorate very complicated and 3Dimensional objects using an extremely flexible plastic film that adheres to an object with heat and vacuum.  The presentation will also review another process that is in use for the decoration of aluminum extrusions at the speed of 70 feet per minute fully automatically. This application allows the user to decorate at higher speed and lower costs.
